Anglers will be encouraged to bring their own casting gear, jigs and poppers and any light tackle gear that they might want to bring along.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 (Thursday or Monday)

New Zealand anglers

  • Depart Auckland DJ 179 at 7am arrive Tonga 9.50am
  • Auckland anglers meet at the airport and transferred to Domestic terminal for flight to Vava'u
  • Depart Nuku'alofa 12.30pm arrive Vava'u 1.20pm
  • Meet at the airport and transferred to Hakula Lodge

Australian anglers

  • Depart Sydney DJ 183 at 3.40pm arrive Tonga 11.10pm
  • Meet at the airport and transferred to Winnies Guest house
Day 2 (Friday or Tuesday)
  • Auckland anglers - early departure, fish between the 3 FAD’s off the Coast of Vava’u for Marlin, Mahimahi and Tuna returning around 5/6pm just in time for a sunset cocktail or cold beer
  • Sydney anglers - after breakfast picked up and transferred to Domestic terminal for flight to Vava'u
  • You have 3 flights to choose from 6am, 11.30am & 2.40pm flight time 55 minutes
  • Meet at airport in Vava'u and transferred to Hakula Lodge
Day 3 (Saturday or Wednesday)
  • Sydney anglers - early departure, fish between the 3 FAD’s off the Coast of Vava’u for Marlin, Mahimahi and Tuna returning around 5/6 pm just in time for a sunset cocktail or cold beer
Day 4 (Sunday or Thursday)
  • Early start fishing the Hot spots for Dogtooth Tuna, Wahoo and Giant Trevally Midday trawling for Sailfish and Marlin
Day 5 (Monday or Friday)
  • Another early start fishing new location for Dogtooth Tuna, Wahoo and Giant Trevally
  • Midday and afternoon bottom fishing on the edge of southern bank for Snapper, Coral Trout and Bass
Day 6 (Tuesday or Saturday)
  • Over night trip to Toku jigging for Dogtooth
Day 7 (Wednesday or Sunday)
  • Return from over night trip
Day 8 (Thursday or Monday)

New Zealand anglers

  • Depart Vava'u your choice of 3 flights 7am, 12.30pm or 4.30pm
  • If you take the am flight you will have all day in Nuku'alofa to tour around (we could arrange a land tour in Nuku'alofa to fill your day at your cost)
  • You are welcome to stay at Hakula lodge for a late check out and catch the last flight to Nuku'alofa
  • Depart Nuku'alofa DJ178 11.59pm arrives Auckland 1.59am Friday or Tuesday

Australian anglers

  • Depart Vava'u 7am arrive Nuku'alofa 7.55am
  • Meet at the domestic terminal and transferred to International
  • Depart Tonga DJ182 12.10pm arrive Sydney 2.55pm


Well it had to happen, 3 Tongan records in a 2 hr spree of fishing at Fonalie 35 miles north of Vava'u (Jurassic park). 66kg 55+ 54kg Dog tooth Tuna New all tackle and 24/37/60kg line class records all in less than 2 hrs fishing. Why don't you come and fish till you drop? Anglers Fredric (Tich) a regular fisherman on his 3rd trip to Hakula, Tich is known as the youngest Old fisherman alive 71. This trip Tich brought with him a few younger mates Tim and Stephen to enjoy the fishing that Vava'u can offer.

Nigel & Damien really did fished till they dropped. Over 5 days they caught Dogtooth tuna, Wahoo, Barracuda, Yellow fin tuna, Skipjack tuna, Striped Tuna, Mahimahi, Job fish, GT's, Blue fin Trevally, Coral Trout. They also tagged and released Blue Marlin & Sailfish . They Truly FISHED TILL THEY DROPPED!
